School Hearing Screener/Audiology Assistant

We are looking for a highly motivated part-time permanent school hearing screener/audiology assistant to be part of a busy and friendly community-based audiology team. 

The post-holders will play a key role in the delivery of the Year-one school hearing screening programme in Leeds primary schools, as well as assisting paediatric audiologists in the assessment of children's hearing at a number of purpose-built audiology test facilities in the city of Leeds.

Previous experience of working in a paediatric clinical setting and/or schools would be highly desirable.

The team has monthly team meetings which include clinical and child protection supervision topics that staff are encouraged to contribute to. 

This role is for an Audiology Assistant and School Hearing Screener who will be expected to work autonomously within each role. The postholder will provide both direct and indirect patient care under the supervision and guidance of qualified staff responsible for patients within the clinical area. They will assist the audiologist in obtaining hearing test results from children through play-based activities within a clinical setting and support team members, ensuring that all activities are carried out within their level of training, competence and knowledge. Working with established procedures and care pathways, the postholder will deliver safe, effective and patient-centred support, contributing to the overall quality of audiology services.

The postholder will work efficiently and confidently guided by established policies and procedures to screen children’s hearing within a school setting. They will develop and maintain the necessary knowledge and skills to perform and record hearing screens safely and accurately. Responsibilities include carrying out the hearing screening programme unsupervised, ensuring each child receives appropriate follow-up. The postholder will liaise with schools in advance of visit to notify and prepare staff, ensuring smooth coordination of screening session.

Effective communication with professional colleagues in both health and education is essential as is the ability to engage sensitively and reassuringly with children, including those with additional learning needs. The postholder will use tact and empathy to gain children’s cooperation and maintain a calm, quiet environment to obtain a hearing test.
