Specialist in Adult Special Care Dentistry

An opportunity has arisen for a Part-Time (0.6WTE; 22.5hours) Band C Specialist Dentist in Special Care Dentistry to join the Leeds Community Healthcare NHS Trust based in the Community Dental Service.

The Community Dental Service aims to be the leading provider of care in special care dentistry for children and adults of Tier 2 complexity and above, in Leeds.

A Specialist in Special Care Dentistry would be expected in their duties to perform dental care for adults in clinics located throughout the city, including in General Anaesthetic theatres within Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and domiciliary visits. Clinical facilities include surgeries equipped with ceiling track hoists, a wheelchair recliner and bariatric bench, surgeries set up to provide inhalation and intravenous sedation, and access to adult comprehensive care under GA. Other duties include supporting the Dental leadership team, supporting the wider dental team, developing the Special Care Dentistry provision in conjunction with the Consultant in Special Care Dentistry and conscious sedation teams and providing both formal and informal teaching and training for all levels of dental trainee present in the service.

A Specialist in Special Care Dentistry is accountable to the Consultant in Special Care Dentistry and Heads of Service.

They would be expected in their duties to perform dental care for adults in clinics located throughout the city, including in General Anaesthetic theatres within Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and domiciliary visits. Due to the nature of the role, having access to their own transport would be essential.

Assessment and treatment of adults of Tier 3 complexity is expected, as is assisting other members of the dental team with clinical queries regarding management of patients.

The Leeds CDS is developing as part of a new West Yorkshire CDS Collaboration with our CDS partners in the Bradford, Locala and Wakefield areas. New care pathways, service developments and mutual aid are expected over the course of the newly awarded contract in order to support and standardise patient care across the region. The Specialist would be expected to attend relevant meetings, deputising when required, and support new initiatives introduced into the service. Attending the SCD Managed Clinical network when required is also expected.

Where a longitudinal, core or mid-year dental trainee is present within CDS, the Specialist may be required to clinically supervise them. A Specialty trainee may require clinical or educational supervision, with formal WPBA’s and portfolio to be completed.

Contribution to the clinical leadership and development of the CDS service.

Job location – citywide service, including domiciliary visits with community sites at Yeadon, Middleton and Chapeltown as well as St James Hospital and Leeds General Infirmary
